Aftercare

POst-Tattoo Care:

Please read this attentively. Each artist has a distinctive approach to tattoo application and their recommended aftercare aligns with their technique. Despite what your friends might advise, adhering to my aftercare instructions is essential. While you might be inclined to celebrate your new tattoo, it's advisable to abstain from parties for a minimum of 24 to 48 hours. Your body will require rest and recuperation. Engaging in festivities could hinder proper tattoo care. Prioritise rest to ensure optimal healing.

Expect your tattoo to evolve and settle over time. Although you'll witness favorable healing results within 1 to 2 weeks, the complete settling process takes about a year. Don't be alarmed; this is a natural phase as your tattoo acclimates to its permanent state. It might be tempting, but refrain from removing any dressings until advised by the artist. Removing them prematurely increases the risk of infection.

After achieving FULL HEALING, remember to apply robust sunblock before going outdoors to maintain the vibrancy of your tattoo. If you desire long-lasting ink, minimise exposure to intense sunlight.

Tattoo Aftercare:

Upon completing your tattoo, your artist will apply an aftercare spray and clean the area with alcohol, which might cause a stinging sensation. This process serves to cleanse, shield, and create a protective layer over the tattoo. Once dry, a specialised aftercare dressing, distinct from cellophane or cling film, will be applied. This adhesive clear bandage safeguards your tattoo while allowing your skin to breathe and preventing dirt and bacteria intrusion. Ideally, wear this dressing for 7 days; however, a minimum of 5 days is essential. If the edges lift, gently press them down or trim them. The majority of the dressing will remain securely in place.

During this period, some coloured fluid accumulation is normal. If the volume is excessive or uncomfortable, gently drain it by applying slight pressure with a paper towel from the sides or bottom. The dressing will re-adhere once dry, even if fluid escapes naturally. If sections of the dressing come off, exposing a significant portion of your tattoo (1cmx1cm or more), remove the dressing. Avoid rewrapping with cling film, as it inhibits skin respiration. Keep the tattoo dry for around 24 hours, then initiate moisturisation 2 – 3 times daily using a thin layer. If the dressing stays on for the full 7 days, immediate moisturisation is acceptable.

Should you experience an allergic reaction, promptly remove the dressing. The symptoms are unmistakable. If uncertain, it's safer to assume there's no reaction.

For aftercare, I recommend a natural and simple option like cocoa butter. While luxurious balms and lotions are beneficial in the initial 3 days, they are less effective when the aftercare dressing remains in place.

Remember, aftercare is vital throughout your tattoo's life, not just its initial weeks. Treat it like a valuable possession—nurture it, and it will maintain its brilliance for an extended period. Establishing a reliable skincare routine will have a lasting impact.

Alternative Post-Tattoo Care:

In case you find it difficult or prefer not to follow the standard aftercare method, here's an alternative approach. Please bear with me as I explain. You'll need Amazon Basics dog training pads, and although it might sound unusual, this method can be effective. These pads have absorbent and waterproof sides. Additionally, you'll need micropore tape—avoid using regular tape; opt for micropore tape for better results.

This method involves a combination of dry and wet healing. For the initial days, cover your tattoo entirely with the absorbent side of the pad. Cut it to match your tattoo's shape, leaving an extra 1 to 2 inches. Secure it in place with tape to prevent it from coming off.

Change the pad frequently—about 3 to 5 times a day. When changing it, make sure to clean it thoroughly. It might be uncomfortable, but it's essential to completely remove the accumulated blood plasma. Your tattoo should ideally not develop any scabs during the initial 2 to 3 days. If you notice any, it's likely due to inadequate cleaning.

Once the tattoo stops oozing fluid, you can discontinue using the pads. Leave it dry in this manner for approximately 24 hours. Following this, start applying moisturiser 2 to 3 times daily. Choose a natural option like cocoa butter and use it sparingly. More tattoos have suffered from excessive cream application than insufficient moisturisation.

As the tattoo starts peeling, allow the process to occur naturally without interference. Pay attention to how your skin feels—if it seems excessively dry, it probably is. However, refrain from going overboard with moisturiser, and definitely avoid picking at the peeling skin. Listen to your body's cues and treat your tattoo with care.
